GOOGLE DOODLE: CELEBRATING DANGDUT
CELEBRATING DANGDUT: BRINGIN INDONESIA’S MUSICAL HEARTBEAT TO THE WORLD
Artist Ardhira Putra was commissioned by Google to create a special Doodle celebrating Dangdut, Indonesia's beloved musical genre, for World Music Day. Displayed on Google's homepage, the animated illustration introduced millions of users worldwide to the energy, inclusivity and cultural significance of one of Indonesia's most distinctive art forms.
Google sought a visual identity that could capture the spirit of Dangdut beyond its music alone. As a genre deeply woven into Indonesian culture, Dangdut represents community, celebration and shared experience across generations and backgrounds.
The challenge was to distil this vibrant cultural phenomenon into a single animated artwork that would resonate with both Indonesian audiences and a global public unfamiliar with the genre.
Drawing on his signature bold colour palettes, dynamic compositions and playful storytelling, Ardhira created a lively animated stage scene bursting with movement and character.
The Doodle celebrates the communal nature of Dangdut performances, transforming the Google logo into a vibrant musical environment filled with instruments, performers and visual rhythms inspired by live concerts.
Through energetic motion and rich visual detail, the artwork captures the joy, accessibility and collective spirit that have made Dangdut a cultural cornerstone in Indonesia.
