Penguin Books commissioned LA-based illustrator Bijou Karman to create the front covers for six John Steinbeck reissues, including Of Mice and Men, East of Eden, The Grapes of Wrath, to The Pearl, Cannery Row and The Red Pony.
Bijou illustrated the author’s most iconic novels to give them a modern twist. Working closely with the creative director at Penguin Books, she wanted to keep the covers very simple but bright and eye-catching and contemporary.
This was a thrilling opportunity to illustrate the covers of John Steinbeck’s novels.
I loved imagining the main characters, researching the looks of the time, and interpreting them into what I consider very modern covers.
