Creative agency Devilfish approached Pocko artist Ben Newman to create the imagery for a dramatization of the BBC’s dramatization of Vasily Grossman’s Life and Fate.
The illustration takes inspiration from old USSR propaganda posters and uses a dramatic colour palette of red, black and off-white.
Although we were initially approached to develop just the still artwork, the brief was expanded to include an animation, telling the story of the infamous arrest of the original novel, which was banned for 300 years.
Our friends at Wonky Films in Bristol collaborated with Ben and Devilfish for the animation. The resulting 30 second spot was broadcast on TV, and the artwork used online. It won a prestigious Royal Television Society Award in February 2012.
