Yasumasa Yonehara, better known as “YONE” has a massive influence on Tokyo’s fashion and art world. View any Japanese magazine rack and you’ll find himself and his work in several publications at a given time. Dazed and Confused, Numero, Warp, Purple(Paris) and countless others have called upon his work in the past month. Yone’s curatorial work has included the artists Nan Goldin, Terry Richardson, Ed Banger Records and Fafi. His photography has led to projects for clients as diverse as Zippo, Charlotte Ronson and he even has his own edition of Fuji Film. In short, Yone’s work shapes how Tokyo and the world views glamour, celebrity, sex, and fashion
I Am Me
Sitting by his industrial sized letterbox in Tokyo, Yonehara plays the part of guardian of the pliant dreams of his readers. One of the most adept navigators of contemporary Japanese popular culture, he conceives and edits numerous magazines that are inspired by and inspire Japanese street culture. His first magazine Egg spawned its own fashion style-that of the Shibuya.

In the hyper-reality of popular Japanese culture nothing is ever as it seems. Every month thousands of the young Japanese girls that read teen magazine Nicola send in illustrated postcards to Yonehara, the editor. On blank cards the girls draw Manga style personifications of themselves.
