Ben Newman had the great honour of being asked to exhibit and give a guest talk at Berlin's Pictoplasma. He had exhibited an updated version of "Masks" show as part of the festival's 'Character Walk' that takes place through the Mitte district in 16 different venues. New collaboration work with creature creator Felt Mistress, and his father Colin Newman, were the main features of the show. Ben's sold-out talk at .HBC was jam-packed of professionals and enthusiasts alike. Ben's entertaining talk explored the wider context and possibilities of his character creation.
Ben Newman has been included for the second year running in the fantastic exhibition Ghosts of Gone Birds. The exhibition takes place at the Rochelle School in London, and highlights the problem of dwindling bird numbers based on extinct species - featuring a host of stellar names contributing amazing renderings of feathered-friends that have died out. Our rising star exhibits with the likes of Ralph Steadman, Sir Peter Blake and Polly Morgan in this stupendously entertaining show with a moral core to boot. It runs until November 23rd, so please have a look if you get the chance.
Simen Johan's latest solo show "Until the Kingdom Comes" opened at NYC's Yosi Milo Gallery recently. Johan's ongoing project depicts an unsettling natural world hovering between reality, fantasy and nightmare, where he merges traditional photographic and sculptural techniques with digital methods. Having originally photographed a variety of plants and animals in natural preserves, zoos, farms, museum dioramas or his own studio, the artist then resituates them digitally into new environments constructed from images photographed elsewhere. Have a look at his updated portfolio here
Hvass & Hannibal have returned from their trip to Beijing, after 10 days of working on an installation for NOTCH Festival 2011. NOTCH is an annual event in China showcasing Nordic and Chinese artists and designers. This year’s theme for the festival was Feedback, and all the artists used recycled materials found in the Hutong area where the factory and exhibition space is situated. Sofie and Nan Na collaborated with a local Chinese designer called Been, and their work consisted of 4 large weaving frames hanging from the ceiling. In between the cotton strings the girls wove pieces of colourful paper from used cigarette boxes. Hvass & Hannibal’s portfolio can be seen here
On Wednesday 17th August, Sanderson will host the latest exhibition of graphic works by Paul Bower, curated and produced by Pocko. Come And Get It features a collection of screen and block-prints by the South-London based artist. Here, Bower exhibits his favourite "lost, but not forgotten" song lyrics, and an array of instant, throw-away messages. His typographical posters play with the familiar and the recognisable in popular culture; twisting the meaning of words to amuse and confuse the audience.
Private View is on 17th August from 6-8 pm, and the exhibition will run until Wednesday 31st, 2011 at the Art Space - Sanderson Hotel, 50 Berners Street, London W1T 3NG.
